Most adults will experience vision impairment from cataracts as they develop naturally with age. For some individuals, cataracts can progress significantly over just a few months. Certain conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and obesity, can cause cataracts to worsen faster. Cataract surgery is one of the most performed surgical procedures in the U.S. and is often an outpatient procedure with immediate results. However, if a patient is uninsured, the procedure can cost, on average in South Carolina, $3,500 out of pocket per cataract. Many South Carolina residents facing socio-economic challenges do not have the means to afford these necessary surgeries and, if left untreated, it can lead to blindness. Since 2011, Operation Sight has performed over 700 sight-saving surgeries for over 400 individuals! Each day we strive to make sure individuals feeling hopeless and approaching blindness have access to necessary, preventative health care. If you would like to know more about the work we are doing at Operation Sight, are looking to get involved, or make a bigger impact on your community, please reach out or visit or website!
